“A one-of-a-kind experience.”
”It’s like walking into the lab of a mad scientist.”

Celebrity Photographer Jeremy Cowart has recently been opening up his studio to anyone to come in for portraits. Jeremy describes this process as a "contrived happy accident" as he puts people inside his strange mix of lights, color and projectors. Jeremy originally came up with the process to shoot backstage portraits at the 2017 Pilgrimage Festival.

If you're new and don't know who Jeremy is, he has been shooting portraits for over a decade. His portrait list includes Taylor Swift, Sting, Heidi Klum, Kelly Clarkson, Tyler Perry, Emma Stone, Britney Spears, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Bryan, The Kardashians, Garth Brooks, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, NEEDTOBREATHE, Switchfoot, One Republic and many more. His clients include ABC, FOX, A&E, F/X, Discovery Channel, ESPN, People, Entertainment Weekly, E!, Universal Records, Sony Records and Warner Brothers Records. His work has been published in Rolling Stone, ESPN Magazine, People Magazine, USA Today, Fast Company, NYTimes, TIME, Nylon and more. Lastly, he was also featured as "The Most Influential Photographer on the Internet" in 2014 by Huffington Post and Forbes.

Q&A

WHERE DO THE SESSIONS TAKE PLACE?

All portrait sessions take place in Jeremy's studio in Franklin, Tennessee.
You’ll get specific directions once you book your session.

WILL YOU BE OFFERING THESE SESSIONS IN OTHER CITIES?

No, this is in Jeremy's studio in Franklin, TN only.

WHAT TO EXPECT

When you arrive, just come on in with your receipt in hand (showing it digitally on your phone is fine). You'll say hi briefly but you'll get right to your portrait since time is limited. Jeremy is very laid back and this shoot will be as well. No need to stress in any way. Photoshoots are fun and this is meant to be fun. If you feel nervous or awkward, that makes you normal. No one loves having their photo taken and everyone is insecure, even the biggest of celebrities. So be at ease and enjoy yourself!

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
The window you’re in the studio is 15 minutes. Generally, Jeremy will shoot for around 10 minutes and then review the photos with you for 5 minutes. But he might shoot for a shorter or longer amount of time. It just depends on when he thinks he has the shots. He moves extremely quickly though and there will be plenty of variety to get the strongest portraits.

DO YOU PROVIDE HAIR/MAKEUP?

No, please arrive camera ready.

WHAT AGES ARE THESE SHOOTS FOR?
CAN YOU PHOTOGRAPH MY CHILDREN?

These shoots are for ages 13 and up. You’ll see once you come to the studio that the setup is very small and tight and framed for grown people. Plus there is tons of gear and cables for smaller children to trip over.

CAN I STILL BRING MY CHILD? CAN I BRING MY FAMILY?

Ideally, for the reasons, above, bring as few people as you can. But if you really need to bring someone with you, that’s fine. However, Jeremy can only photograph one person at a time for that 10-minute block of time. If you also want another person (13y/o and older child, friend, family member) photographed, you’ll have to buy an additional block of time for each person. This setup is just very specific and tight and is only meant to frame one person at a time.

WHAT DO I WEAR?

You can wear whatever you want to wear, because this is your portrait to have for forever. But generally speaking, it’s good to keep it simple and timeless. Also, Jeremy thinks that darker clothes work better than brighter. There will be a variety of backgrounds that Jeremy will explore so it doesn't necessarily matter what you wear.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

$250 for the window of shooting and digital delivery of final selects.

WHAT GEAR WILL YOU USE?

Jeremy will be shooting with the Canon 5Ds, which is a 50-megapixel portrait you’ll be receiving. For lighting, he'll be using a slew of lights and diffusers from both Profoto and Westcott Lighting. He's invented a process that produces quite a bit of variety of looks.

HOW WILL I GET MY PORTRAITS AND HOW MANY DO I GET?

Jeremy will choose the strongest portraits and will send you an email with a dropbox link to download it within a week after the shoot.

WHY DO YOU CHOOSE THE PORTRAITS?

This isn’t about the best or most flattering photos of you. This is about the strongest, most intriguing, definitive portraits of you. Jeremy has over 15 years of experience shooting portraits and identifying what makes a good one.  And the biggest thing Jeremy has learned in that time is that it’s always obvious, sometimes immediately, which portraits are the strongest.

CAN I FURTHER EDIT MY PORTRAIT AFTER I RECEIVE IT?

Jeremy would really prefer you not touch your portrait after you receive it, for the same reasons you wouldn’t paint over a painting that someone has made for you. As mentioned above, Jeremy has spent a decade learning lighting, post-production, retouching, color, etc. So everything he does during the entire process is very thought out and purposeful. We know those VSCO presets or that Instagram “Nashville” filter are tempting to use, but please do not further edit your portrait in any way.

CAN I USE THESE FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES?

Yes, but it’s complicated. If you want your portraits to be used for commercial purposes (album cover, album packaging, book covers, advertising, etc.), there will be additional costs and those will have to be negotiated separately with Jeremy and his business manager. So please let Jeremy know during your set if you’d like to negotiate that. Posting them to social media networks is great and encouraged but they may not be used for any commercial uses unless negotiated separately with a different contract. Why? Offering $250 commercial shoots would be undercutting the entire photography industry. You may also use them on your business cards, on your website and as a general publicity headshot at no additional charge.

(Please note: by signing up, you’re agreeing that you’ll only use your portrait for personal use and social media, not commercial use. You’re also agreeing that Jeremy Cowart Photography, Inc. owns the rights to all images created.)
