"Digitype": A process, invented by Jeremy Cowart, that is a modern, digital nod to the tintypes of old
Celebrity Photographer Jeremy Cowart has recently been opening up his studio to anyone to come in for "digitypes." Jeremy describes this process as a "contrived happy accident" as he puts people inside his strange mix of lights, color and projectors. Jeremy originally came up with the process to shoot backstage portraits at the 2017 Pilgrimage Festival.
If you're new and don't know who Jeremy is, he has been shooting portraits for over a decade. His portrait list includes Taylor Swift, Sting, Heidi Klum, Kelly Clarkson, Tyler Perry, Emma Stone, Britney Spears, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Bryan, The Kardashians, Garth Brooks, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, NEEDTOBREATHE, Switchfoot, One Republic and many more. His clients include ABC, FOX, A&E, F/X, Discovery Channel, ESPN, People, Entertainment Weekly, E!, Universal Records, Sony Records and Warner Brothers Records. His work has been published in Rolling Stone, ESPN Magazine, People Magazine, USA Today, Fast Company, NYTimes, TIME, Nylon and more. Lastly, he was also featured as "The Most Influential Photographer on the Internet" in 2014 by Huffington Post and Forbes.

Examples of Digitypes:
WHERE DO THE SESSIONS TAKE PLACE?
All portrait sessions take place in Jeremy's studio in Franklin, Tennessee.
You’ll get specific directions once you book your session.
WILL JEREMY BE OFFERING THESE SESSIONS IN OTHER CITIES?
No, this is in Jeremy's studio in Franklin, TN only.
WHAT WILL MY PORTRAIT LOOK LIKE?
For starters, check out the examples above.
Your portrait will have a more moody, vintage, sepia look to it. Please note that your portrait might also be slightly blurry and/or slightly out of focus. Jeremy's goal for your portrait is to make a one-of-a-kind piece of art that you can't get anywhere else.
WHAT TO EXPECT
When you arrive, just come on in with your receipt in hand (showing it digitally on your phone is fine). You'll say hi briefly but you'll get right to your portrait since time is limited. Jeremy is very laid back and this shoot will be as well. No need to stress in any way. Photoshoots are fun and this is meant to be fun. If you feel nervous or awkward, that makes you normal. No one loves having their photo taken and everyone is insecure, even the biggest of celebrities. So be at ease and enjoy yourself!
IS HAIR/MAKEUP PROVIDED?
No, please arrive camera ready.
WHAT AGES ARE THESE SHOOTS FOR?
CAN JEREMY PHOTOGRAPH MY CHILDREN?
These shoots are for ages 10 and up. You’ll see once you come to the studio that the setup is very small and tight and framed for grown people. Plus there is tons of gear and cables for smaller children to trip over.
CAN I STILL BRING MY CHILD? CAN I BRING MY FAMILY?
Ideally, for the reasons, above, bring as few people as you can. But if you really need to bring someone with you, that’s fine. However, Jeremy can only photograph one person at a time for that 10-minute block of time. If you also want another person (13y/o and older child, friend, family member) photographed, you’ll have to buy an additional block of time for each person. This setup is just very specific and tight and is only meant to frame one person at a time.
WHAT DO I WEAR?
You can wear whatever you want to wear, because this is your portrait to have for forever.
But generally speaking, it’s good to keep it simple.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
$250 for the 10-minute (max) window of shooting and digital delivery of selects.
WHAT GEAR WILL JEREMY USE?
Jeremy will be shooting with the Canon 5Ds, which is a 50-megapixel portrait you’ll be receiving.
For lighting, he'll be using a slew of lights and diffusers from both Profoto and Westcott Lighting.
HOW MANY PHOTOS ARE TAKEN IN 10 MINUTES?
Jeremy shoots at a very rapid pace, using his process. He doesn't guarantee a full 10 minutes of shooting. He'll shoot until he feels like he has a great portrait and using his process, that doesn't take long.
HOW WILL I GET MY PORTRAITS AND HOW MANY DO I GET?
Jeremy will choose the strongest portrait or portraits and will send you an email with a dropbox link to download it very soon after the shoot.
WHY DOES JEREMY CHOOSE THE PORTRAITS?
This isn’t about the best or most flattering photos of you. This is about the strongest, most intriguing, definitive portrait of you. Jeremy has over a decade of experience shooting portraits and identifying what makes a good one. And the biggest thing Jeremy has learned in that time is that it’s always obvious, sometimes immediately, which portraits are the strongest.
CAN I FURTHER EDIT MY PORTRAIT AFTER I RECEIVE IT?
Jeremy would really prefer you not touch your portrait after you receive it, for the same reasons you wouldn’t paint over a painting that someone has made for you. As mentioned above, Jeremy has spent a decade learning lighting, post-production, retouching, color, etc. So everything he does during the entire process is very thought out and purposeful. We know those VSCO presets or that Instagram “Nashville” filter are tempting to use, but please do not further edit your portrait in any way.
CAN I USE THESE FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES?
Can I use my portrait for my album cover? Book cover? Advertising? The short answer is no.
These portraits are for personal use only. Posting them to social media networks is great and encouraged but they may not be used for any commercial uses UNLESS we negotiate that usage separately with a different contract. Why? Offering $250 commercial shoots would be undercutting the entire photo industry and all of Jeremy's peers and fellow photographers. That’s why this is mostly for personal use and social media use. You may also use them on your business cards, on your website if you’d like and as a general headshot.
(Please note: we will require you to sign a simple agreement stating everything in the paragraph above, that you’ll only use your portrait for personal use and social media, not commercial use.)
